Solomon: Local Businesses Show Support for Street Cleaning Program
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 27 – State Rep. Jared Solomon, D-Phila., today joined local business owners to highlight support for his ongoing street cleaning program impacting the commercial corridors of Bustleton, Castor and Rising Sun avenues in lower northeast Philadelphia.
“Business corridors set the whole tone for a community,” Solomon said. “Until you get that right, you can’t begin to start tackling the big things.”
Last fall, Solomon created a street cleaning program in which his office and businesses in the 202nd Legislative District provide resources to Jidan Cleaning, the business that leads clean-up efforts. The program has been successful and is attracting additional business interest.
Speakers at the news conference included Antowine D. Harris of Murano Deli, Dr. Louis A. Brown, Orlando Jacome of Tio Pepe, and Sal and Angela Nunez of Bucann. Project partners Patricia Claybrook of Jidan Cleaning and Andrea Hodge of Oxford Circle CCDA also gave remarks.
“If the corridor is clean, customers will keep returning,” Claybrook said. “My team has really taken ownership and interacted with local businesses so we can grow this into a daily street cleaning project.”
Other businesses in support of Solomon’s program include New Olympia House Restaurant, Picanha Brazilian Steakhouse and Al Sham Restaurant.
Solomon said the cleaning program was envisioned in conjunction with legislation he is co-sponsoring (H.B.s 1812 and 1813) to address chronic nuisance issues that cause problems for downtowns and neighborhoods throughout Pennsylvania. The bills would increase penalties and fines for chronic nuisance issues and remit a portion of the additional fines back to the municipalities for litter remediation efforts.
